THE FORTUNA, CALIFORNIA ROTARY CLUB OF FORTUNA SUPPORTS FORTUNA HIGH ENGLISH STUDENTS WITH SCHOLARSHIP SPEECH CONTEST

Fortuna Rotary Club held their annual Speech Contest with the theme of “Reaching Within to Embrace Humanity” which is the Rotary International’s theme for 2012. The Fortuna High student contestants were Kelcey Hein, Clarissa Borges, Mikaela Stanley-Camba and Maite Cortes Garcia.

The students crafted their speech around the Rotary theme and were given a minimum of five minutes and maximum of seven minutes to present their speech. The student names were withheld during the competition while the judges evaluated their presentations on a variety of criteria. All contestants received a scholarship from $60 to $140.

The students chosen for this competition were the result of an earlier English class assessment coordinated by their English teacher Raven Coit.

ROTARY CLUB OF FORTUNA PARTNER WITH WENDT CONSTRUCTION, A.M. BAIRD ENGINEERING, EUREKA READY MIX, AND FORTUNA SUNRISE ROTARY

Rotary Club of Fortuna partnered with Wendt Construction, A.M. Baird Engineering, Eureka Ready Mix, and Fortuna Sunrise Rotary to install 110 feet of sidewalk across from Fortuna Union High School along J Street.  Club members wearing “Rotarian at Work” tee-shirts, worked side by side with a Wendt Construction crew to dig out, form and pour in excess of 11 cubic yards of concrete.  For years, high school students walking to their campus along J Street were forced to use the street itself or the unimproved pathway adjacent to the street.  Rotary viewed this worthwhile community service project as one where Rotarians could do hands on work to benefit the students of Fortuna High.

The Rotary Club of Fortuna was successful in receiving a District Simplified Grant that helped fund the project.  Grant monies come from donations collected from Rotary members throughout the District covering Del Norte to Sonoma Counties and then dispersed to clubs through a competitive application process.  The grant, coupled with the generosity of Wendt Construction, A.M. Baird Engineering and Eureka Ready Mix, brought this community service project to reality providing students a safe place to walk to school.

FORTUNA ROTARY CLUB DEDICATED NEW MEMORIAL MONUMENT

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2207, The American Legion Post 205 and the Rotary Club of Fortuna announced the dedication of a new memorial on the grounds of the Veterans' Memorial Hall in Fortuna on Jan. 5.

Clista Lewis of Lewis Redwood Products and Granite Headstones Custom Design designed the beautiful granite block memorial. It is inscribed, “In Honor of all our Veterans Past, Present and Future Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.”

All of the organizations involved would like to give a special thanks to Dennis Wendt from Wendt Construction for installing the memorial and the Fortuna Garden Club for sharing a space in their Blue Star Garden. There are three vases carved into the monument for the public to place flowers if they wish and flags will be displayed during Veteran's Day and Memorial Day. In a release the organizations said the memorial is “for to all of the brave men and women who have served, or will serve this great nation.”

FORTUNA ROTARY DONATES "CHILDREN'S BOOKS" TO FORTUNA LIBRARY

It has been the tradition of the Rotary Club of Fortuna, through its Literacy Project, to donate "children's books" on various topics to local school libraries.  Unfortunately, many elementary school library programs in the Eel River Valley have been cut due to funding priorities.
This year, Rotary Club of Fortuna provided in excess of 50 books to be placed in the children section of Fortuna's Public Library.  Librarian, Chris Cooper gratefully received the books June 23rd from Rotarian Kate Lanferman.  Kate explained that during the Rotary Year, weekly guest speakers at the Club are asked to sign and date a children's book.  The book is then donated to a local school library on their behalf.
This year's collection of books covered topics ranging from picture stories to biographies of historic American heroes, all intended to bring the Literacy level of children to a higher standard.
